The death has occurred of Dr. Rory O’Hanlon on the 31st of March, 2026.
Rory studied medicine in UCD before moving to Carrickmacross as a GP. He had his clinic beside his house in Mullinary which many people from Carrickmacross & South Monaghan knew well having attend it over the years. In a medical emergency he would having no hesitation calling out to people in their home day or night.
Rory was very active in local politics and was first elected to the Dáil, as a Fianna Fail TD in 1977. He was re-elected at every subsequent Dáil election, until his retirement in 2011. He was appointed as Minister for Health in 1987 and Minister for the Environment in 1991 and became Ceann Comhairle of the 29th Dáil in June 2002 and remained in that role until 2007.
Rory was instrumental in the setting up of this website, Carrickmacross.ie back in 2001 and as a result it is one of the oldest town websites in Ireland. Rory was always very supportive of the drive for IT in Carrickmacross and was keen to see the town develop it’s digital capacity.
His involvement in projects in South Monaghan and the County as a whole are too numerous to mention here, but anyone who worked with Rory will no doubt remember his dedication & commitment to the area.
