Want to get out of the house for an hour or 2 after yet another Christmas dinner? Maybe even catch up with old friends for a craic? Well why not do all this while getting some exercise as well. Carrickmacross Scout Group are holding a family walk/fun run on Sunday 29th Dec to raise funds to help with further development at their new campsite in Dun na Ri Forest.
The campsite provides a safe and secure haven for more than 200 local youths to explore and develop as they learn new life skills and build lifelong friendships.
Carrick Scout Group caters for children aged 7 and older with various sections for the different age groups. These sections are Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers. Each of these sections is run by local volunteers who dedicate a lot of their spare time to the cause. There are more than 40 trained volunteer Scout Leaders assigned to organising and running the various sections. It is their task to organise and provide suitable activities for the young members within each section. They organise and run a weekly 2hr meet in the local scout hall, along with regular camp weekends both on their own campsite and other secure scouting campsites throughout Ireland and even further afield.
Carrickmacross Scout Group purchased their campsite from Coillte a few years back and to date have done a magnificent job developing the facilities. They now need to raise funds to help with further developments which are currently being carried out on the site.
As a part of this we are organising a FamilyWalk / FunRun on Sunday 29th December. The event will start from the scout hall (beside St. Joseph’s church) at 2pm. There are 3 routes of approximately 5km, 7.5km and 10km so it provides an excellent piece of training for runners/walkers planning on doing the Killanny 5k on new year’s day or the Emyvale 10k. Registration will be open from 1.30pm at the scout hall. Cost €10pp. Children go free. Under14s must be accompanied by an adult. Fancy dress optional. Refreshments served after in the scout hall.
