On Monday evening, 1st October 2012 the Carrickmacross boxing club welcomes Deirdre Gogarty (a very successful boxer). A native of Drogheda and now living in the USA, she is coming to visit the club and launch her new book ‘My Call to the Ring’. She will be meeting the boxers and signing her new book at an open training session.
Deirdre left Ireland in the 1980’s to box because women’s boxing was not accepted in Ireland. Deirdre decided to follow her dream and left for USA were she worked and trained through hard times to eventually win a World Featherweight title. This is an inspiring story for our young athletes (male or female) especially as it’s at the same timing as women boxing entered the Olympic Games.
Ireland let this lady down in the eighties and now it’s her turn at the age of 43 to share her story on home ground. It will be nice celebration for the Phoenix, Boxing and any other sports clubs in Carrickmacross and its surrounding area. Usually these events are held in Dublin or Belfast. Deirdre will be on Newstalk and Ireland AM, hopefully before this event. The local newspapers will also attend.
